BEB ... What Is It?
Benign Essential Blepharospasm
"The term blepharospasm ['blef-a-ro-spaz-m] can be applied to a forced, sustained, and involuntary closure of the eyelids. It stems from a number of causes, beginning with dry eyes, and, may progress to a state where the person is "legally blind".
The blepharospasm referred to here is officially calledBenign Essential Blepharospasm(BEB). "Benign" indicates the condition is not life threatening, and "essential" is a medical term meaning "of unknown cause"." www.blepharospasm.ca

Yes Grandma Wears Funky Glasses
More often than not you will see me wearing what my grandchildren call funky glasses ... not to be cool or to be told they look like Elton John's but because Grandma has this very rare eye condition, called Benign Essential Blepharospasm (BEB),
This movement disorder of the eyelids affects an estimated 5 out of every 100000 people, mostly women, with the average age of onset being 56.
Benign Essential Blepharospasm Week
Toronto May 16th to May 22nd

Hopefully this post will help raise awareness of this disorder which in turn will help in raising funds for research into the cause to help find a cure.

Kathy,
I'm sorry to hear that you are one of the people afflicted with this rare condition. I hope that research brings about a cure or easy treatment so that no one has to deal with the difficulties this must present in their every day lives....
Jo
Hi Jo - the big issue for me and a lot of otthers was and is getting a proper diagnosis ..... it took me quit a while to get a diagnosis ..... for years every one I saw said it was just dry eye syndrome but nothing they prescribed gave any real measure of relief ..... At least now I get short term relief (3 to 6 months) by getting the Botox injections
Kathy, I am sorry as well to hear this news. Hopefully they will be able to find a way to heal your situation...Lots of Blessings to you
Kathy, I had never heard of this, but certainly will pay attention now. I have dry eyes and am sensitive to light myself. Best wishes to you, and thanks for sharing this information. Re-blog coming up!
Lotti - Thanks for spreading the word ..... I know from my own experience once I found out about it and checked it out on line it was a simple thing to suggest to my doctor that it might be my problem with my eyes ..... this resulted in an immediate referral to a doctor who deals with this specific disorder who was able to confirm the diagnosis and start treatment immediately.
Kathy I am so sorry that you suffer from this. I am glad you were finally correctly diagnosed. How funny about the botox. My doctor has been trying to convince me for many many years to try it for my migraines.
